Crazy! The way a good Drum and Bass night should be. That's the way it went down at the first Drum and Bass party for the 2k3. Put on by the Phreaktion crew (www.phreaktion.com) a crowd starved of heavy hitting breaks got what they came for by the truckload. Decoration was minimal but effective, adding a real jungle feel to the venue.

DJ Siesta warmed things up nicely with a selection of Brazilian-esque tunes mixed with some old harder classics. A new DJ on the local DnB circuit, Siesta's technical skills are fast improving and her crowd-pleasing style makes her one to keep an eye on. N1R, the guest DJ from Toronto, played a refreshing set of upfront breaks in his debut performance in HK. Solid skills and track selection were displayed and no doubt you'll be seeing him play at parties in the near future.

For the next 2 hours, Phreaktion regular J-P tore the place apart, mixing a selection of heavy amen rinsers with funkier grooves slotted between, making sure there was something for the ravers and the ladies. On the mic was newcomer MC Snicka G laying down the lyrical law. Snicka G was solid in his debut MC performance with many in the crowd appreciating his lyrical style. Highlights included J-P dropping the crowd destroying "Platinium" by D.Kay and Epsilon and his sublime mix from "Tough at the Top" into Pharcyde's "Passing me By". At this point the venue was so packed the organizers had to stop letting punters in because even standing room was scarce! Madness.

J-P's set left the crowd wanting more, and Hong Kong's original selectah DJ Jonathan a.k.a. Fat Demon didn't let them down, playing everything from classics like "Champion Sound" to brand new promos including "Sticky Situation" by Break, nice. DJ Kontra rounded the night off nicely, keeping things strictly Drum and Bass, opening his set with the epic "Morning Light" by Concord Dawn.

Props to the Phreaktion crew for putting on such a good party. The crowd was really up for it, recognizing big tunes and reacting to the MC. It's great to see more and more people getting into Drum and Bass. There's talk of some big UK Dnb DJ's coming out to HK in the coming months too so keep your eyes and ears peeled¡K Booyah!
